Why Apple Shouldn’t Hurry iPad Refresh

Apple (AAPL) is predicted to introduce new iPad models later this 12 months as it works to return to growth in the pill market following quarters of shrinking fortunes. The business enterprise said it shipped ~13.0 million iPads inside the December sector, or economic 1Q17, down 19% YoY (12 months-over-12 months). additionally, Apple said revenue from its iPad business slid 22% YoY to $five.five billion.

Problems facing tablets range from the market being cannibalized by larger-display smartphones to the habit of buyers holding onto their devices longer before they think about upgrading to a newer model. Intense competition is another possible factor, as the tablet market has continued to attract more players. Besides Samsung (SSNLF), Apple faces competition in the market from Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet’s (GOOGL) Google, Amazon (AMZN), and Sony (SNE).

If these are the challenges, then Apple needs to substantially redesign its iPad products to not only prevent smartphone cannibalization but also give customers a reason to upgrade their devices.

Radically redesigned iPad in the works
Although Apple is notoriously secretive about its product development plans, supply chain leaks have revealed that the company is working on a radically redesigned iPad for release this year.

According to Mac Otakara, a Japanese Apple blog, one of the likely design changes in the next iPad would be doing away with the physical home button. Similar claims have been made about the next iPhone, which will mark Apple’s ten-year anniversary in the smartphone business.

Other rumors cited by DIGITIMES have said Apple could push back the release of this year’s iPads to the second half of 2017. As it takes time to come up with a product that can move the needle, Apple isn’t hurrying to release its next iPad devices.
